Weekly Alpine Markets
There are weekly markets during the winter ski season in both Morillon and Samoens. The Morillon market is on a Friday afternoon in the old town centre (5 minute walk from the Morillon cable car), and the Samoens market is on a Wednesday morning. The markets are typical alpine affairs, with lots of cheese, Haute-Savoie wine, various cured meats, and lots of arts and crafts stalls. Our favourite has to be the local chicken rotisserie along with the sauteed potatoes that marinate in the juices of the roasting chicken!
Samoens Market Rotisserie Chicken
Both Morillon and Samoens ski resorts have outdoor ice rinks that are open during the winter. Morillon ice rink is located next to the Lac Bleu lake which is directly in between Chalet Mautalent and the Morillon cable car. The Lac Bleu restaurant has a roaring outdoor fireplace where you can sip a vin chaud in between skating sessions. Samoens ice rink is located in the town centre opposite the tourist office.
Cross Country Skiing
We are spoilt for choice with cross country areas in Le Grand Massif. Called ‘Ski de Fonds’ in France, there are 46km of crossing country skiing pistes in the Giffre valley, mostly in Morillon and Sixt Fer a Cheval. For the more advanced cross country skier (and later in the season when the snow starts to melt in the valley), the Col de Joux Plane offers 35km of pisted ‘Ski de Fonds’ at an altitude of 1700m. This skiing gives amazing panoramic views over the Giffre valley and the whole Grand Massif ski area.
There is a shuttle bus specifically for cross country skiers which accesses all the different Ski de Fonds areas in the valley. Click here for more information.
Cross Country Ski Passes can be purchased at both the Morillon Tourist Office and the Samoens Tourist Office. A list of prices can be found here.

A great activity for families or besotted couples. Starting from the tourist office in the centre of Samoens ski resort, there are a number of trips available around Samoens and through the old quarter of town.
There are toboganing and sledging runs at both Samoens 1600 and Morillon 1100. We can provide sledges at your chalets.
Le Criou Cinema Samoens has a wonderful art deco cinema located in the town centre. They have daily showings, and around twice a week they will show a film in english.
