Tasty Ski Breakfast

Sara Maitland is an internationally esteemed writer of both fiction and non-fiction, like A Book of Silence and Mosswitch (a collection of short stories developed with international scientists.) She is also broadly experienced in tutoring, mentoring and leading workshop groups.

She is very much looking forward to a week in this exceptionally lovely part of the French Alps, which will include a daily workshop, individual sessions with each of the writers and walks in the mountains – plus The Tasty Ski Company’s famous cooking. The course is open to any writer who wants to develop their work – from beginners onwards.

Structure of The Day

8.00 – 9.00am: Breakfast

9.30 – 1.00pm: Workshop (with coffee break). We will explore different topics and writing techniques through exercises, sharing our work with each other and discussing it.

2.00 pm – 7.00pm: After lunch, participants are free to do whatever they like: relax, go for walks, read, nap, chat to each other or work on their own writing. Click here for the various activities available in Samoens and Le Grand Massif. On one afternoon we’ll have a group walk and all participants who want to will have a one to one session of an hour with Sara (we’ll construct a schedule for this at the beginning of the week).

7.00pm: Gather for dinner. Then eat it!

c. 8.30pm: There will be an after-dinner group event. This will be different each evening – on one of them Sara will do a reading and on the final evening everyone else will read from something they have produced during the week. (We hope!)

What To Bring

Other than writing materials / laptops (we have a printer) it depends how you want to spend the middle of the day. There are lots of exceptional walks in and around the Giffre valley. If you want to enjoy the longer walks we suggest you bring:

  • Walking boots with good ankle support and a strong sole.
  • Waterproof/windproof jacket (preferably Gortex) and waterproof trousers.
  • Hat and gloves (it can get cold if you go on the higher altitude walks).
  • Warm 2 season jacket or sweater/fleece.
  • Water containers or Thermos Flask to contain 2 litres of liquid.
  • Rucksack to carry items during the day.
  • Sun hat (the sun in the Alps has a very high UV factor and is very intensive), sun screen and lip balm.
  • Dry flow wicking clothing rather than cotton – it dries much quicker and is more comfortable when walking.

*Please note that we have a minimum number of participants required for the course to go ahead. This will be confirmed on 31 July.
